Note link rope (しめなわ; simenawa)
"Shimenawa" is a kind of "straw knotted rope" passed from China to Japan. It is said that when Xu Fu crossed the sea to seek the elixir for Qin Shihuang, Xu Fu brought Chinese grains and farming techniques to Japan. In order to thank Xu Fu, the Japanese used The straw is made into knots and decorated at the entrance or in the center of the shrine to show respect for the five grains.
Shimenawa is a rope woven from straw and grass stalks. During the New Year in Japan, it is hung on the porch of the house or decorated indoors. It is a symbol of good luck and avoiding evil.
