How to Use This Book:
1. This book will help you identify the most common flowers in Britain and Europe. It is recommended that you bring this book with you when observing plants outdoors in Britain.
2. The flowers are arranged by colour to make them easy to find. Although the illustration shows a flower in one colour, you may find the same flower in different colours. For example, in the illustration, the Delphinium is blue, but it may also be purple or white.
3. The picture in the circle next to the main illustration shows a close-up of the flower, or the seed or fruit of the plant. The fruit will help you identify the plant at different seasons.
4. A description of each plant is given next to the illustration. The plants are not drawn to scale, but the average height from the ground to the top of the flower has been shown. The season in which the plant usually flowers in Britain is also given.
5. If a plant has a common name, that name is used in this book. If not, the Latin name is used. Try to find someone knowledgeable in gardening to say the Latin name out loud for you so that you may learn to pronounce it correctly.
What to Carry:
Carry the book, a notebook and a pencil to record your findings. Carry a tape measure to measure the height of the plant or the width of the flower. A magnifying glass will help you to observe the different parts of the flower more closely.
Drawing Your Discoveries:
And record details about them. Be sure to include the height of the plant, the colour and shape of the flowers and leaves, and where you found it.
Each time you find a flower, tick the small circle next to the illustration of that flower.
Score Card:
The score card at the end of the book gives you points for each flower you discover. Flowers that are easy to find are worth 5 points, and uncommon flowers are worth 25 points. Add up your score after a day’s observation. You may also tick the box if the flower you see is a different colour to the illustration in the book.
