Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. Born into a firefighter's family in Edo (present-day Tokyo), he became a student of the ukiyo-e master Utagawa Toyohiro in 1811. His 1833-1834 series of 55 landscape prints, "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō," established his status as one of the most beloved ukiyo-e artists of all time. Due to immense demand for his landscape prints, mass production sometimes affected quality. He created over 5,000 paintings, with over 10,000 reproductions from some of his woodblock prints. His genius was first recognized by Western Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, who were also greatly influenced by him. Hiroshige's style is approachable, refined, and intimate, making him a widely known artist among the public in Japan at the time.
