Name: Pagoda Like Light
Origin | Tang Dynasty, Bai Juyi's "On the Pagoda of Buddhist Sutras"
Original Verse: "Within the pagoda's shadow, sutra chants are faint; in the lamplight's glow, the Buddha's face shines bright."
Poet Introduction:
Bai Juyi (772–846) was a renowned poet of the Tang Dynasty, known for his accessible language that depicted the lives of common people and religious sentiments. In his later years, he embraced Buddhism and often used his poetry to portray Buddhist temples and states of spiritual cultivation, expressing a blend of worldly engagement and detachment.
Modern Translation:
Faint sutra chants are heard within the pagoda's shadow; the Buddha's compassionate face is illuminated by the lamplight.
Design Interpretation:
This golden pagoda is nestled amidst green mountains and forests, symbolizing a miniature Buddhist realm. The surrounding rocks are hand-carved and layered, representing life's experiences, while the pagoda stands as a beacon of inner light, quietly illuminating the entire terrarium. Though Buddhist teachings are silent, they possess immense power, fostering wisdom and concentration in light, and peace in stillness. This piece is suitable for those seeking tranquility, spiritual practice, or anyone wishing to add a sense of grounded serenity to their living space.

Nature Hill ✦ A Scene, A Meaning, Respecting Nature's True Heart
Multi-tiered Pagoda (Futú)
One of the common architectural styles in East Asian Buddhist temples. The pagoda's body is layered, symbolizing stages of spiritual practice and steps toward wisdom. They typically have an odd number of tiers, such as five, seven, or nine.
Five tiers symbolize the Five Skandhas (form, sensation, perception, mental formations, consciousness), a deconstruction of the self;
Seven tiers symbolize the Seven Factors of Enlightenment (mindfulness, investigation of phenomena, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration, equanimity), the foundation for spiritual practice;
Nine tiers carry the meaning of the "Nine Grades of Lotus Thrones," corresponding to the nine levels of cultivation for those reborn in Pure Land Buddhism.
Therefore, the pagoda is not only a place for blessings but also a symbolic space for self-cultivation. In this piece, though the pagoda is small, its meaning is as high as the mountains and as distant as the light, worthy of quiet contemplation and appreciation.
