This visual guide meticulously documents four distinct styles of Taiwanese tiles from roughly the 1920s to the 1980s, approached from a graphic design perspective and categorized by their form and patterns. It encompasses the Majolica tiles that adorned grand residences and Western-style buildings during the Japanese colonial era; the smaller-faced tiles like *xiaokou* and *dinggua* that saw widespread use following the Great Kanto Earthquake; and the mosaic and printed tiles that emerged with the rise of the local tile industry in the mid-1950s, shaping Taiwan's early architectural identity.
The first half of the guide features historical context, photographs taken by the author across Taiwan, and an analysis of the visual design principles behind these tile motifs. The latter half presents 100 redrawn tile patterns with Pantone color recommendations. These tile patterns are available for personal and commercial use, with attribution required. The aim is to inspire creators across various fields to reinterpret and build upon the spirit and value of these precious tile designs, allowing their essence to endure.
