**> Types of Cinnabar**
Water-ground cinnabar, Emperor cinnabar, Purple Gold cinnabar, and Crystal cinnabar all belong to high-content quality cinnabar. Their **primary differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and processing methods**.
**"Water-ground Cinnabar"**
**A true red, with a slight orange undertone. Its surface has a gentle matte luster that will become more lustrous with wear, developing a patina.**
This type is made by repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, collecting the upper "cloudy liquid" after settling, and then allowing it to precipitate again (a water-grinding purification method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then pressed using ancient techniques. Even in cross-section, uniform, fine mineral sparkling particles can be observed.
**"Emperor Cinnabar"**
**A more vibrant true red with higher hardness.**
This cinnabar is refined from natural raw cinnabar ore through multiple processes including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-grinding/high polishing**. It is then pressed using ancient techniques. Emperor cinnabar has almost no surface sparkle but exhibits internal sparkle. The surface is treated with **high polishing** for a metallic sheen, especially under sunlight, enhancing its metallic feel.
**"Purple Gold Cinnabar"**
**A purplish-red hue with slightly lower hardness than Emperor Cinnabar.**
This type is processed from natural raw cinnabar ore through multiple steps like **crushing/grinding/screening**, but **without water-grinding purification**. Therefore, its surface is less refined and features scattered, tiny sparkling mineral specks, resembling a starry sky.
**"Crystal Cinnabar"**
**A purplish-red color with translucency.**
Large cinnabar crystals are directly chipped from cinnabar ore. Visible crystal particles are clear on the surface, and under light, each piece is transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.
**> Spring Planting, Autumn Harvest**
**All things that unfold gracefully, poetically, and beautifully in this world tend to happen naturally, just like the turning of the seasons.**
**Learn to slow down, quiet your mind, treat life with gentleness, revere the power of time, and allow everything to grow naturally, like a tree, focused and fearless, developing clear growth rings.**
**Our handcrafted pieces are made with the same philosophy!!**
**> About Cinnabar**
The earliest written records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is a pictographic character; in ancient times, miners would dig shafts and extract minerals from within. Thus, "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying something extracted from within a mine. This substance is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dān shā) became known as "朱砂" (zhū shā). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregular granular minerals.
The color of cinnabar is enduring. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dān qīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. It is also a crucial component of "eight treasures ink paste," one of the essential pigments.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that have absorbed the essence of the sun and moon, embodying the purest *qi* of heaven and earth. Therefore, cinnabar possesses a powerful *yang* energy field. We notice that jade feels cool to the touch, while cinnabar feels warm.
Historically, cinnabar has been indispensable in Taoist practices such as drawing talismans, consecrating objects, warding off evil, and suppressing malevolent influences. Cinnabar has always been revered as a supreme item for attracting good fortune, transforming luck, suppressing negative energy, dispelling evil, inviting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of overwhelming luck, prosperity, and well-being.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior herb, often used in medicinal treatments for calming the spirit, detoxification, and alleviating insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in modern times, possessing one or two cinnabar artifacts can also contribute to self-cultivation, nurturing both the eyes and the mind.
**> Authentication**
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar with a substantial weight. You can use the following methods for authentication:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat it indirectly. It is generally not recommended to burn the finished product directly, as controlling the time and area can be difficult. Once blackened, it cannot be restored.)
>. Genuine cinnabar can draw an orangey-red line on paper. (To avoid damaging the appearance of the finished product, please choose an inconspicuous area or use the complimentary bead for testing.)
**> Care and Maintenance**
**If cinnabar jewelry does not contain accessories made of metal, wood, or plant materials (such as bodhi seeds), it can be exposed to water occasionally but should not be soaked for extended periods, as this can affect its luster.**
**It is not recommended to get the braided cord wet. After washing, allow it to air dry before wearing, as wearing damp cords can lead to excess moisture, which is not ideal for the body.**
1. Avoid Corrosives
Cinnabar is a mineral and does not dissolve in water, but frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode it.
2. Avoid Contact with Metal Objects
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling or blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercury sulfide component in cinnabar will only release at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as cinnabar jewelry is kept away from high-temperature environments, it can be worn with confidence.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects
Cinnabar is hard but brittle; handle with care to prevent drops.
5. How to Clean
If your cinnabar appears dirty, do not soak it in water, as this can alter its original luster! Gently wipe it several times with a slightly damp cotton cloth and allow it to air dry.
6. Oil Polishing Method
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product. Allow the surface to absorb the oil, which will make it more lustrous and clear. If you apply oil and then seal it in a brocade box, you can wrap it in plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the velvet lining of the box.
7. Frequent Handling
Regularly handle your cinnabar jewelry by touching it with your hands. This will allow a very thin layer of oil to accumulate on the surface, giving it an antique and elegant appearance over time.
The actual item is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
