"Monkey Business!"
Why do private investigator ads everywhere use the term "catch a monkey"? There are three theories: The first originates from the Japanese colonial era, when Taiwanese people would break a monkey's tail to prevent it from escaping into the mountains. Similarly, catching a cheating spouse involved cutting off their hair as punishment. The second theory extends the "leading a monkey" performance, a traditional puppet show, to imply an improper relationship. The third theory suggests that in earlier times, wives often referred to their husbands as "old monkey," thus the term "catch a monkey" emerged. With the development of internet information, individuals can increasingly access information easily. However, early private investigators, beyond their investigative functions, perhaps acted more like underground counseling services, supporting the helpless souls within anxious families.
