Gesha Village, a producer of annual surprises, is owned by Adam Overton, an American documentary filmmaker, and his wife Rachel Samuel, an Ethiopian photographer. In 2007, they were commissioned to film a documentary about coffee in Ethiopia. As their work progressed, they developed a deep connection with the land and its people, sparking a dream to establish their own coffee estate. This vision gained significant momentum after they met Willem Boot, who played a crucial role in selecting the estate's location, coffee varietals, and processing methods. To this day, Willem Boot leads annual tours to the estate and stays to oversee the coffee's post-harvest processing.
Gesha Village cultivates three varietals. The first is Gori Gesha, sourced from the Gori Gesha forest, accounting for 43.7% of the estate's planting area. The second is Illubabor, from the Illubabor forest, making up approximately 20% of the planted area. The third is the well-known Gesha 1931, which closely resembles the Gesha varietal grown in Panama today in terms of its growth habit and flavor profile, representing about 37.3% of the estate's plantings.
Beginning with the 2018 harvest season, Gesha Village implemented a new tiered grading system, dividing all batches into four internal categories to further enhance quality control.
1. The highest tier is the Auction Batch, which constitutes only 3.7% of the estate's annual production. In 2018, we collaborated with estate owner Rachel Samuel and consultant Willem Boot to host a series of cupping and sharing sessions in Taiwan. The auction concluded in June, with the highest lot setting a new record at $105 USD per pound. The GVA 05 lot, jointly purchased by roasters from Taiwan and Hong Kong, was completely pre-sold before its arrival.
2. The second tier is the Gold Label Batch (Rarity Label). This batch represents only 5% of the estate's production, making it nearly equivalent to the Auction Batch. Considering the differences in taste preferences between East and West, and the unique character each bean develops during maturation, the Gold Label batches often surpass the Auction Batches in our estimation. They are a treasure trove for discovery and a preferred choice for competitors worldwide. In the 2018 World Barista Championship held in the Netherlands, the champions from Australia and Japan selected Gold Label batches for their competitions.
3. The original term for the Red Label Batch is Grower’s Reserve, signifying the estate owner's special selection. From the Auction Batch to the Gold and Red Label batches, all offer complete traceability from harvest to final product, processed as individual, distinct lots. While the Red Label Batch may be slightly less intense than the Gold Label, it remains a favorite of the estate owner and embodies the representative flavors of Gesha Village. Thus, the owner named it Grower’s Reserve, offering exceptional value in terms of quality and price. Similar to the Gold Label Batch, the Red Label Batch is also produced in very small quantities.
4. The Green Label Batch (Single Terroir) is one of the main series of green beans released under the "Gesha Village Estate" name and is the most affordably priced among all the main series. The original term, Single Terroir, succinctly highlights the focus of this series. Like all products in the main series, the Green Label series maintains complete traceability information for both 'varietal' and 'growing plot,' hence its designation as Single Terroir.
Within Gesha Village's internal grading system, Green Label batches still exhibit the characteristics of their varietal and plot. However, in internal cupping evaluations, their flavor is considered slightly less pronounced than that of the Gold and Red Label batches. This is precisely where the opportunity lies. As we know, flavor preferences vary across markets. Furthermore, internal cupping and grading often occur relatively early in the season, before many promising beans have fully realized their potential. As our team is often among the first to receive samples during the early stages of the harvest season, we have the chance to secure batches that we believe offer exceptional value.
