Sanxia Wen Stone originates from areas in New Taipei City, Taoyuan City, and the Zhudong Township of Hsinchu County in Taiwan. Most are found in regions like Hengxi, Shilang, and Wuliao within the Daxi District of Taoyuan City, and within Fuxing District. The geological environment for the formation of Sanxia Wen Stone and Penghu Wen Stone is quite similar. Both are largely formed by crystalline deposits filling the voids within basalt. Radiometric dating indicates that the basalt containing Sanxia Wen Stone is approximately 9.1-10.3 million years old, while Penghu basalt dates back to about 8.2-16.2 million years ago. Their eruption periods are very close, or they may even be products of simultaneous volcanic activity. Professor Chen Zheng-Hong of National Taiwan University's Department of Geosciences classifies the basalt in the Sanxia Wen Stone producing areas and the basalt of the Penghu Islands as igneous rocks of the western Taiwan rock zone.
Development
After each typhoon passes, stones with concentric patterns appear in the streams from Sanxia District in New Taipei City to Zhudong in Hsinchu County. A 1978 report by the Taiwan Provincial Mining Bureau on Penghu Wen Stone investigation mentioned the discovery of minerals similar to Penghu Wen Stone in the basalt around the Guansi area of Taoyuan City in northern Taiwan. In the early 21st century, processed Wen Stone began to be sold in the jade market, subsequently becoming a collector's item for rock enthusiasts. Due to its later discovery, its fame is far less than that of Wen Stone from Penghu or Sicily.
