The history of Notojima Glass dates back to 1984, when Ishikawa Prefecture invited the Tokyo Glass Research Institute to establish the Notojima Glass Workshop in a repurposed, decommissioned school building. The initiative aimed to develop innovative glass techniques, attract tourists, and stimulate regional growth. In 1991, the Notojima Glass Art Museum was inaugurated, showcasing diverse contemporary glass artworks. The workshop's establishment coincided with the opening of the Notojima Bridge, which facilitated the island's development. The project creatively repurposed the idle school facility and drew inspiration from ceramic artists in Tsubata Town and Venetian glass production on Murano Island.
