There are seven colors to choose from: black/ Silver/fog gold wood color/black walnut/maple/teak Artist: Alexander Calder Born in Lawton, Pennsylvania in 1898, Alexander Calder is widely considered to be a pioneer of kinetic art, a genre of art that used movement and motion from about 1920 to 1970. Calder's parents were both artists, but he initially studied mechanical engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. After graduating in 1922, Calder continued his studies at the Art Students League in New York, where he studied painting. In 1926, he moved to Paris and began to create his first wire sculptures, which would become the prototypes for his later hanging works. A visit to Piet Mondrian’s studio in 1930 so moved Calder that he turned from figurative art to abstraction; in a letter to Marcel Duchamp, he said he wanted to create “Mondrian in motion.” Over the next few years, Calder began to create abstract moving works, what Duchamp called “mobiles,” and artist Jean Arp referred to Calder’s static works as “static sculptures.” Experimenting with pure abstract shapes and bright contrasting colors, Calder developed his own unique artistic vocabulary. In 1952, Calder won the Grand Prix for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale and was invited to create major public commissions until his death in 1976. Today, Calder’s works are in the permanent collections of many leading museums, including the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Museo Nacional Centro Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, which houses the world’s largest collection of Calder’s works.
