Introduction of works:
Johann Christoph Erhard (Johann Christoph Erhard) left 195 works in his short life at the age of 27, but he has a place in German romantic prints. The artist's etching skills are outstanding. His father is a local Silver wire craftsman in Nuremberg. He soon discovered his son's talent in painting and decided to let him devote himself to artistic creation. In 1809, Elder first learned the techniques of direct engraving and etching at the Nuremberg copperplate artist Ambrosius Gabler. Although Gebler is not an outstanding artist, he can discover the strengths of his students, and Aird thus demonstrates his advantages in landscape painting. Elder also sketches from life with like-minded artists and paints the beauty of his hometown. During the Napoleonic Wars, Russian troops often passed through the Nuremberg area, giving him the opportunity to depict the army and horses, which became a feature in his works.
After Napoleon's fall in 1816, Alder went to Vienna to study the art collection there. He was deeply inspired, and he also wrote much about the scenery of Vienna. He hiked with his friends and traveled across Austria. What he saw and heard became the source of his creation, and he also received many commissions from art dealers. In 1819, he went to Rome. The local scenery fascinated him. The scenery, historical sites, works of famous artists, and the villagers made him work endlessly, and he also produced prints for different art dealers. However, he already had a melancholic tendency in Germany. After arriving in Rome, his situation deteriorated. On the morning of January 18, 1822, he raised a gun and committed suicide.
His prints show his deep understanding of nature, revealing his own characteristics, and his pen style is cautious, with a strong poetic and unrestrained artistic conception. Different creative themes, such as landscape, architecture, army soldiers, custom sketches, portraits, etc., are handled in a light and delicate manner. Those etching brushstrokes that lift the weight become his personal brand.
This [Knight in the Valley] is an etching of Alder in Vienna, and it should be the scene he and his friends saw when they were hiking in various districts of Austria. At the foot of the mountain in the distance, there is a monastery, and the protagonist is about to descend into the valley on a horse. There are trees in two places in the deep valley, reflecting each other, while the big rocks in the foreground echo the mountains in the distance. The cracked deep valley has become an inexplicable threat, adding a certain mysterious uneasiness to the picture, but the seminary bathed in light is like a kind of soul salvation. German Longmanist prints not only record the travels of many artists, but also integrate religious life into the pictures. [Knight in the Valley] Once again, let people see the omnipresence of the creator. In the hearts of these romantic artists, a large piece of nature has its mystery and sublime, and there is another divine existence that is higher than human reason. The prerequisite for the greatness of nature.
