He was born into a wealthy family and learned painting from his father Chang Shufang since childhood, and calligraphy from the famous artist Zhao Xi. In 1919, he went to Japan to study. In 1921, inspired by Cai Yuanpei's "work-study" trend in France, he went to Paris to study art with the help of his elder brother Chang Junmin, starting his life in France. Sanyu was naturally unrestrained and pursued freedom in life and art. He did not study in a formal art academy, but entered the free-spirited Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Unlike his contemporaries such as Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian, he did not return to China to start a school after graduation, but chose to stay in Paris for the rest of his life, becoming one of the very few Chinese representatives of the Paris School in the 1920s. In the 1920s and 1930s, Sanyu's works were promoted by his friends such as Henri-Pierre Roché, a famous French writer, collector and art dealer, and Johan Franco, a famous Dutch composer. Not only did he become famous in Europe, but he was also highly respected by famous poets and writers in the Republic of China, such as Xu Zhimo and Shao Xunmei, who lived in the East. Under the impact of Western modern thought, Sanyu experimentally reinterpreted the Chinese artistic tradition and achieved an aesthetic conception that transcends culture. Nudes, flowers and animals are the three major themes in Sanyu's creation. His early works are elegant in color, smooth in lines, and the pink and white tones are filled with a pleasing romantic mood. In the 1940s, Sanyu briefly went to New York to develop his career and forged a deep friendship with the American photography master Robert Frank. After returning to Paris in the 1950s, he met Zhang Daqian, a fellow Sichuanese who came to France to hold an exhibition, and the two became close friends in their later years. With the ups and downs of life experience and the homesickness of his long-term absence, Sanyu's later works are more rich in gorgeous oriental colors. The works of animals wandering in the desert are like a projection of his own image. In 1964, Sanyu was invited to teach at the National Taiwan Normal University and hold a solo exhibition. He was ready to return to the East, but for some reason he was unable to do so. His works that traveled across the ocean to participate in the exhibition were placed in the National Museum of History, Taipei, and have become the most important series of museum collections of Sanyu. Other important institutions that have collected Sanyu's works include the Cernuschi Museum, Paris, and the National Art Museum of China, Beijing. In 1966, this wanderer died unexpectedly in his Parisian apartment due to a gas leak at home, writing a legendary period in his life. Today, Sanyu is a recognized master of modern Chinese art. In 2005, the Guimet National Museum of Asian Art in Paris held a large retrospective for Sanyu, which further confirmed his international status as an important member of the Paris School. In 2014, Chang Yu's "Gathering Fortune and Fragrance" was sold for more than 80 million Hong Kong dollars at Sotheby's Spring Evening Sale in Hong Kong, and another painting "Leopard" was sold for nearly 80 million at Sotheby's Autumn Evening Sale in 2017. This shows that Chang Yu's artistic concept is widely recognized by collectors and has become an important chapter in Chinese modernism. 🙏 https://image-cdn-flare.qdm.cloud/q665027dd6a3a4/image/data/2022/08/29/f474db4c7d2cbb8953d30485601543d0.jpg https://image-cdn-flare.qdm.cloud/q665027dd6a3a4/image/data/2022/08/29/01451e1b2c72deed1184151e6ebbdacc.jpg https://image-cdn-flare.qdm.cloud/q665027dd6a3a4/image/data/2023/02/24/4719a94553c28951c56ba75fa77decb3.jpg https://image-cdn-flare.qdm.cloud/q665027dd6a3a4/image/data/2022/09/08/72b8e415cf4575a1a1821b04568ee67d.jpg https://image-cdn-flare.qdm.cloud/q665027dd6a3a4/image/data/2022/04/12/c6d34fbc231337ab8da27935ab4f31db.jpg
