This occurs when the glaze and the clay body have inconsistent shrinkage rates during firing, or when the glaze itself possesses unique properties, creating a distinct visual and tactile effect. It can be an intentional artistic design or a result of unstable firing conditions. 🔍 Common Types of Crazing: • Crawling Glaze • The glaze cracks like a turtle shell, with glaze pieces exposing the raw clay body between them. • Causes: Uneven glaze application, overly thick glaze layers, high glaze fluidity, or impurities (oil/water) in the clay. • Orange Peel Texture • The glaze surface shrinks finely, appearing uneven like the skin of an orange. • Causes: Uneven glaze particle size, varying melting points, or special firing atmospheres. • Oil Spot or Metallic Glaze • The glaze surface displays metallic spots, shimmering particles, and a slightly uneven texture. • Typically found in iron-based or Tenmoku glaze systems. Crazing arises from the differential shrinkage rates between the ceramic glaze and the body material during the sintering process. The glaze melts at high temperatures to form the glazed surface, while the body material also shrinks during sintering. Due to differences in chemical composition and melting points, the glaze and body contract at different rates during cooling, generating stress. Tea steam ascends, A breath of the forest, softly transcends. 🪴 About Tu Ching-He (涂慶賀) | Glaze Magician | Ceramic Artist Born in Changhua in 1953, Master Tu Ching-He entered the ceramic industry in Yingge after completing his military service in 1975. He apprenticed under Master Lin Bao-Jia, revered as the "Father of Taiwanese Ceramics," and further honed his glaze formulation and preparation techniques under Japanese artisans. With a "laboratory spirit" and a solid foundation in craftsmanship, he rose to become the director of a large-scale kiln and received numerous national accolades, including the Golden Pottery Award and the Taipei Arts Awards, in the 1990s. His works are held in the permanent collection of the Yingge Ceramics Museum. At the height of his creative career, Master Tu was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2000, leading him to step away from the ceramic world for a time. However, his passion for clay ultimately reignited his artistic spirit. Despite the involuntary tremors in his hands, he returned to the pottery wheel, transforming the rhythms of his life into the vibrant dance of his glazes. These traces, enveloped by thick glazes, transform into a unique "sense of life's rhythm." • Practice of Humanistic Zen: Whether tea bowls or flower vases, his lines tend towards simplicity and rustic charm, embodying an aesthetic philosophy of "great wisdom appears foolish." The Master firmly believes that vessels truly complete their life as artworks only through "use," through contact with human hands and mouths. ▎ Creative Philosophy "Applying glaze is the accumulation of life's cultivation; firing the kiln is the burning of life's flames." For Master Tu Ching-He, creation is a struggle and reconciliation with the self. He finds joy in the "surprise" within the unpredictable high temperatures of the kiln, viewing each kiln opening as the awakening of the glaze's life.
