I create my works based on the traditional Japanese craft of Ikkanbari. Ikkanbari is a method of decorating a basket product with white washi paper, then decorating it with colored washi paper or cloth, and finally applying persimmon tannins and water-based varnish.
It is a craft that requires finishing. Many of the pieces use old fabrics and paper, but my work uses more everyday materials.
The red washi paper base is decorated with auspicious flower patterned fabric. The inside is covered with orange washi paper. The handle is covered with a refreshing blue Japanese pattern. A cloth drawstring bag is included to change the look and hide the contents.
