This category of tie pins began to gain popularity around the 1830s, initially worn by affluent gentlemen before becoming widely fashionable in the 19th century. Their primary function was to secure the pleats of silk or lace ties and cravats.
As they were worn by a discerning clientele, the materials and designs were often quite distinctive.
This piece originates from Bijoux Fix (established 1823) in France. The gold is a thick plating of 14K or 18K gold, resulting in a beautiful hue.
An exceptionally rare and intriguing human face motif!
Total length is 6.2 cm, with the main body measuring 1.5 x 1 cm.
