The gateway to time, forever held in the heart; gathering a piece of light to illuminate the soul. Windows, essential to a home for ventilation and shelter, also serve as conduits connecting different spaces, carrying profound meaning. Using glass salvaged from old houses, this material, once a guardian, is transformed through design and craftsmanship into functional tableware, continuing to protect the light within our hearts. The aged glass undergoes cleaning, cutting, and grinding, followed by high-temperature firing and careful cooling. This process significantly enhances the inherent fragility of pressed glass, often a result of rapid cooling during its original production, restoring its resilience and strength. Precise temperature control ensures that the beautiful patterns remain visible as the glass is bent into shape. Glass is a fully recyclable material, imbued with time and memory. A friend once commissioned us to repurpose the windows from her childhood home during its demolition, allowing the "memories of a lived space" to continue accompanying her. The transparency and refractive qualities of glass capture and play with the light in a space, its shadows shifting dynamically. This mirrors how memories, as time passes, can become vivid or hazy, each with its own character. Hence, the name "Gathering Light" (拾光), not only highlighting the properties of glass but also symbolizing the collection of cherished moments from life and nostalgic reflections of bygone days. It also sounds like "time" (時光). Since 2010, when we began crafting and teaching glasswork, we have consistently used reclaimed old glass as a primary material, employing it in kiln-firing and bending techniques, a practice we continue to promote. This tea scoop, crafted from salvaged window glass, can also serve other purposes. The accompanying wooden frame, cut and polished to reveal its natural grain, forms a rest for the scoop. This set is complemented by a tea needle made from 100% recyclable hand-forged brass, and optional matching teapot stands or glass coasters cut into various shapes, perfect for serving fruits and snacks. Together, they create a beautiful ambiance for you to savor tea, taste, and life.
