Nihonga is a style of painting that uses glue as a medium, mixed with powdered natural minerals and water. It is applied with brushes onto paper, silk, linen, or wood panels, and can also incorporate various materials to express a multitude of possibilities. "Gouache painting" is a term coined in Taiwan after World War II. In Japan and other countries, it is known as "Nihonga," and during Taiwan's Japanese colonial period, it was referred to as "Tōyōga" (Eastern Painting).
