The Remnant Flesh
Why do people leave everything behind? "There was a church, a school, a reservoir, now they've all gone to the UK to open garages," goes a local rhyme. The island is small, but the pursuit of the future is like the sea surrounding it, endless and unseen.
Located east of Sha Tau Kok, the island, known as Ap Chau, resembles a half-submerged duck. After the 1920s, more and more Tanka people settled here. From the 1960s onwards, Ap Chau residents began working in urban Hong Kong or sought their fortunes in the UK, establishing roots there. Kat O, sharing a similar long history as a fishing village, met a comparable fate, with a large portion of its villagers emigrating. In the 1950s, when Hong Kong's fishing industry flourished, Kat O was home to over four thousand people. Today, most houses are uninhabited, and the school closed over a decade ago. Only two or three family-run ice houses near the pier remain, opening for a few hours on weekends.
Those who leave carry an island within their hearts. Yet, a deserted basketball court and a church remain, still waiting for someone to return by sampan one day.
