【Taiwan Swallowtail Butterfly】
Also known as the Broad-tailed Swallowtail, this butterfly is endemic to Taiwan and is classified as a critically endangered species, a Level 1 protected treasure. Adult butterflies have a wingspan of 9.5-10 cm. The forewings are dark brown, and the hindwings feature a large white spot in the central cell, bordered by a row of red crescent markings on the outer edge. Its most distinguishing characteristic, setting it apart from other butterfly species, is its exceptionally broad tail-like projection, traversed by veins 3 and 4, which are also red. The markings and shape are consistent between males and females, though females are slightly larger. First discovered in 1932 in the Yilan area, it is primarily found in forested regions between 1,000 and 2,000 meters in central and northern Taiwan, with notable populations in the Taipingshan and Lalashan areas. Its southern limit extends to Tengzhi in Kaohsiung County. With its exquisite beauty and extreme rarity, the Taiwan Swallowtail Butterfly has earned the esteemed title of "National Butterfly of Taiwan."
