In 1666, scientist Isaac Newton discovered that sunlight refracted through a prism could produce a spectrum of colors, revealing that white light is composed of various colors. In 1801, British scholar Thomas Young initiated studies on human perception of color. He proposed that by selecting three basic primary light colors with significant separation and combining them in different proportions, almost any color could be generated within the visible spectrum.
Turner infused his landscape paintings with personal interpretations, making the depiction of light, air, and water his specialty. This personalized approach to landscape profoundly influenced Claude Monet, the "father of Impressionism," leading to the creation of works like "Impression, Sunrise." Turner's art not only redefined landscape painting but also laid a crucial foundation for the development of Post-Impressionism.
---------
Turner's prodigious talent was recognized early by the art world, granting him the financial freedom to fully express his unique style. David Piper, in "The Illustrated History of Art," described his later works as "mysterious riddles." Critic John Ruskin characterized him as someone who could "terribly and truthfully grasp the pulse of Nature."
Turner was drawn to depicting natural phenomena and cataclysms: fires, shipwrecks, sunlight, storms, heavy rain, and fog. He was captivated by the power of the sea. While he included human figures, they served to accentuate the sublime and wild grandeur of nature, which humans could not conquer—a testament to divine power. Consequently, his later works focused on rendering light on water, skies, and flames, gradually moving away from literal representation and paving the way for Impressionist theories.
His early works employed more traditional techniques. However, in his later period, he integrated watercolor techniques into his oil painting, capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. It is said he once had himself tied to the mast of a ship during a storm to experience the fury of the tempest firsthand.
In his final years, he rendered his oil paintings with increased transparency, using thin layers of color to achieve pure light effects. In works like "Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway," the outlines of objects are almost indistinguishable. The intense tones and transient interplay of light and shadow established Turner as a leading British painter and significantly influenced later French Impressionists, particularly Monet, who studied his techniques with great care. In 1816 (the year without a summer), exceptionally brilliant sunsets inspired some of his works.
