[Content Synopsis]
Foreword by Tse Kwan-ho: "(The author) transforms historical records into vivid stories through his personal experiences."
Tse Kwan-ho: //Hong Kong is a city steeped in stories; every street, every sign bears the weight of time. Pawnshops, an ancient trade, have served as the city's undercurrent, silently witnessing countless lives unfold. Mr. Tsui Chun-pong has spent a decade traversing Hong Kong's pawnshops, gathering these fragments of history hidden within the urban landscape, compiling them into his third book on Hong Kong pawnshops—"Da Yap: Stories of Hong Kong Pawned in Pawnshops."
Last year, I had the privilege of collaborating with Mr. Tsui on the television drama "Bright Pawnshop." During his time as a consultant, he was always courteous and affable, possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of anecdotes and industry regulations related to Hong Kong's pawnbroking sector. His insights were invaluable, opening our eyes and enriching our understanding.
Mr. Tsui's passion for pawnshops borders on the obsessive; he is truly a 'pawnshop aficionado.'//
Over the past decade, author Tsui Chun-pong has visited every pawnshop in Hong Kong, completing over 200 pawn and redemption transactions without ever defaulting, a feat that surely marks him as a person of high standing. These experiences have deepened his understanding of the pawnbroking industry.
Among his many interviews, the most meaningful and rewarding for the author was when Mr. Tse Kwan-ho sought him out for information about pawnshops. Mr. Tse was preparing to produce and act in the television drama "Bright Pawnshop" and needed to conduct research on the Hong Kong pawnbroking scene. The author eventually became a consultant for the series, an outcome he never envisioned when he initially began his research.
The author remarked: "Perhaps this book will be the last publication on my research topic of pawnshops. However, I can confidently say that the work of researching pawnshops will continue. I hope to uncover more materials on Hong Kong's pawnshop culture in the future, contributing my part to the preservation of Hong Kong's historical and cultural heritage."
