Sori Yanagi graduated from the Japanese Academy of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) and founded the Yanagi Design Institute in 1950. In 1957, his Butterfly Chair won the Golden Compass award at the Milan Triennial. Yanagi believed that hands could convey the warmth and ideas of a product more effectively; by feeling with one's hands, the answers would emerge. Each piece of tableware is meticulously calculated and adjusted by hand, with needs and functions considered before designing the shape. If one were to name the most admired and representative design master of contemporary Japan, it would undoubtedly be Sori Yanagi.
