This is a story of love at first sight. ⚡️ One summer day in 2018, I took my husband to visit St. Lazare's Cemetery, which is not far from our home. I needed to take some pictures for my image bank and I really wanted to see this beautiful cemetery. When I got home, I did some research to learn more about this magnificent cemetery. Through my research, I quickly learned that Alexander Cabanel (whom I didn't know at the time) had been buried there since 1889. I looked up his paintings on the internet and fell in love with his academic style, which I thought was a perfect depiction of him. A few days later, I went to the Faberling Museum to learn about the permanent collection of a painter I was already crazy about. In one of the gallery's corridors, I came face to face with this self-portrait. At the height of my vision, this small painting seemed to be a true reflection of his face, right in front of me. Obviously, my eyes were filled with tears during this first pseudo-physical contact with Alexander. His dark gaze seemed to pierce my eyes, the look, his hair, his beard ...... I liked everything. It's like falling in love with a ghost at first sight. As you can imagine, it wasn't easy to document. A few days later, I went back to the cemetery and told him that I loved him and that I wanted to introduce him to the public. I had so much respect for this man that I waited three years before I dared to touch his paintings. I visited him from time to time, and soon I would go to show him what I had done and tell him something. So here is a self-portrait of Alexander Cabanel, painted in 1852, when he was 29 years old, and he's perfect. I love him.
