Thank you. The Hakogaki, scientifically known as Astrophytum ornatum, is a barrel cactus belonging to the Astrophytum genus. It is the largest cactus in this genus, capable of growing between 30 to 120 cm. Like the Star Cactus (Astrophytum asterias), it features beautiful spots. However, it is quite uncommon in cultivation and rarely offered for sale, making it a unique find. Native to the Hidalgo and Querétaro regions of Mexico, the Hakogaki is spherical when young, becoming columnar as it matures, with a diameter of up to 15 cm and a height of up to 120 cm. It grows very slowly. Typically, it has eight ribs, is dark green, adorned with white spots on its body, and possesses yellow, rigid spines. It flowers in summer, with large yellow blooms appearing at the apex, often several opening simultaneously. 【Care Instructions】 Caring for the Hakogaki is relatively straightforward. A suitable soil mix can be made by combining perlite with peat moss, and adding vermiculite and cinders in any proportion, prioritizing aeration. A top dressing of large-grained river sand is recommended. This Hakogaki variety is not particularly tolerant of intense direct sunlight. During its growing season, water thoroughly when dry. Mature plants require less water. Generally, water only when the soil is completely dry, ensuring it drains well. Summer is its growing period, requiring slight shade and good ventilation. From July to September, during high temperatures, maintain a cool, airy environment. From September to December, water only when dry. Throughout the cold winter months, when temperatures drop below 2°C, watering is almost entirely withheld as the plant enters dormancy. Reduced watering helps prevent frost damage and root rot in low temperatures. The Hakogaki is relatively cold-tolerant when the soil is dry. During the growing season, water the Hakogaki thoroughly when dry, avoiding overhead watering, as poor ventilation can lead to root rot. Watering in spring should be gradual, paying attention to weather changes. The Hakogaki is considered a relatively easy-to-care-for plant. 📝 Key Care Points: Prefers well-draining soil that prevents waterlogging.
