A Resting Place Sought by Migratory Birds and People Alike, from the Northeast Coast to Taichung
Tanniu Yang on the Northeast Coast is an indispensable stop for migratory birds along the East Asia-Australia flyway. Every year, thousands of birds traverse mountains and seas to rest, forage, and breed in this wetland. A rich ecological network, woven from grasslands, paddy fields, ponds, and streams, provides not only a haven for migratory birds but also nurtures a diverse array of resident birds and wetland creatures.
However, years of human development and changes in farming practices have gradually degraded the habitat quality of Tanniu Yang. Since 2019, the RE-THINK Environmental Ethics Development Foundation has initiated the "Tanniu Yang Conservation Project," focusing on waterbirds and promoting habitat monitoring and eco-friendly farming. Working hand-in-hand with local farmers, they adjust their cultivation rhythms and protect the land's vitality:
Plowing earlier and maintaining flooded fields after harvest.
Avoiding the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.
Replacing herbicide use with manual weeding.
These farming methods provide waterbirds with food, shelter, and a safe haven, giving rise to "Yu Feng Rice," blessed by the wings of nature.
Facing Taiwan's super-aged society, fostering a harmonious relationship between "nature and agriculture" is not merely about ecological preservation; it is a practice for the healthy aging of both people and the environment.
