What is Vegetable-Tanned Leather?
Vegetable tanning is a term for a traditional method of processing raw hides. It is the most traditional tanning method and the only one that imparts unique characteristics to the leather. This process uses plant-derived tannins, making it free from harmful heavy metals, benzene, and phenols commonly found in other tanning methods, embodying true environmental friendliness. Leather tanned using plant-based tanning agents (like tannic acid and polyphenols) is known as vegetable-tanned leather, or "Vegetable tanned leather" in English.
Characterized by its dense fiber structure after tanning and greasing, vegetable-tanned leather has minimal stretch, holds its shape well, and offers a firm yet supple feel without greasiness. The grain and suede surfaces possess a natural luster. As it contains no harmful substances to the human body, vegetable-tanned leather is safe for direct skin contact and suitable for leather goods that come into contact with the skin.
Leather Usage Guidelines
- Cleaning
It is generally recommended to avoid excessive treatment, as minor blemishes tend to blend in and contribute to a unique, rustic aesthetic as the leather darkens. If small amounts of water accidentally splash onto the leather, it will absorb quickly, and no marks will remain once dry. Exercise caution to avoid contact with liquid oils.
- Maintenance
Natural leather, much like human skin, requires protection from oils. The natural oils secreted by the skin form a protective layer on leather goods, and regular use imparts a warm luster and rich color. Leather is largely composed of fat, and proper conditioning with care oil helps vegetable-tanned leather develop its color beautifully. Animal fats are generally recommended as conditioning oils due to their compatibility with leather. Mink oil, a popular choice, is often referred to as a "protector of leather goods." While it may initially deepen the color of vegetable-tanned leather, the color gradually returns as the oil is absorbed and evaporates, making it suitable for daily care.
