It is renowned for its peculiar appearance and neoteny (the failure to undergo metamorphosis into a terrestrial adult due to a lack of thyroid hormones). Axolotls can remain aquatic throughout their lives as long as they do not perceive threats from predators or lack of food. In addition to neoteny, Axolotls possess astonishing regenerative abilities. Instead of healing with scars when injured, they can regrow new limbs within months and even regenerate vital organs like their brain and eyes. Although the historical practice by the Aztecs of consuming wild Axolotls has been regulated, factors such as habitat destruction and the invasion of alien species continue to challenge their survival.
