**Asiatic Cheetah**
The Asiatic cheetah is a subspecies of the African cheetah that once inhabited many countries in South Asia and the Middle East, extending as far as Russia.
Cheetahs have been revered as pets symbolizing wealth and status since ancient times, and were highly favored by royalty in the Middle East and India. Due to their extremely particular environmental needs, captive breeding of cheetahs was very difficult. In ancient times, it was common practice to capture cheetah cubs from the wild for domestication, which unfortunately led to a high mortality rate among young cubs that could not adapt.
The reliance on wild captures for cheetah domestication, coupled with continuous hunting for their pelts, created a vicious cycle that drastically reduced the population of the Asiatic cheetah. The last confirmed sighting of an Asiatic cheetah in the wild was in southern India in 1948, leading scholars to believe the subspecies had gone extinct. Decades later, to everyone's surprise, Asiatic cheetahs were rediscovered on the high plateaus of Iran. Currently, there are over 50 to 100 cheetahs in this region, and active conservation efforts are underway.
**IUCN Status: Critically Endangered (CR)**
