. Study of a hand from nature .
During the Victorian era, there was a fascination with the hand, a phenomenon reflected in the design of jewelry, home decor, and even everyday objects. Countless pieces of jewelry emerged, showcasing hands in various graceful poses – exquisite, delicate, and refined. Clearly, the human "hand" possesses a rich spectrum of gestures and expressions, capable of connecting with numerous symbols.
This sketch is inspired by a study of a hand, drawn by Queen Victoria herself, with the inscription "Study of a hand from nature."
What in nature can compare to the gestures of the human hand? Though merely a part, it can accomplish various tasks and convey such diverse and complex messages.
In the first week of 2024, I revisited the performance of "Huang Yi and KUKA" in Chiayi – a duet between a dancer and the robotic arm KUKA.
I had previously traveled to Banqiao to see this work in 2017. At that time, to promote cultural equality, sign language was incorporated. The dancer remained still, moving in sync with the robotic arm, using only her hands to interpret the lyrics of the song "When I Fall in Love." Those simple yet elegantly timeless hand movements, perceived through my ears and eyes, transformed into a beautiful "language." It reminded me of Pina Bausch's "The NELKEN Line" from her Carnation Dance, with its equally unforgettable hand gestures.
Clenching, opening.
Extending, lowering.
Dancing, stilling.
Poetic emotions conveyed through gesture, where everything is communicated without words.
