"Prelude to Water Melody" by Su Shi
When did the bright moon first appear? Raising my cup, I ask the azure sky. I do not know, in the palaces of heaven, what year it is tonight. I long to ride the wind and return, yet I fear the crystalline towers and jade halls are too cold and high. Dancing with my clear shadow, how can it compare to the human world?
The moon rounds the vermilion pavilion, low in the ornate window, shining upon the sleepless. It should bear no ill will, yet why does it always appear full when people part? Humans have sorrows and joys, separations and reunions; the moon waxes and wanes, is bright and dim. Such perfection has been rare since ancient times. May we all be blessed with longevity, and though far apart, share the moon’s beauty together.
