In Tibet, yaks are cherished members of the family, treasured like gold. Their existence is vital for survival on the plateau, providing milk, wool, and meat. Families even give each yak a name, caring for them as they would their own children. In the harsh winter, they bring them into their rooms to sleep together. Though meat is consumed sparingly, one yak is traditionally sacrificed each winter for sustenance. The chosen yak is selected a month in advance, and the women of the family spend every day chanting mantras for it. Even though the yak gives its life for humans, having lived its life surrounded by love, it is believed to depart filled with the energy of blessings.
