"Le Bijou" illustrated book introduction_
Full name "Jewelry Art and Industry Review: Jewelry and Watch Jewelry"
"Le Bijou" is a jewelry illustrated book published from 1878 to 1899. The illustrated clients are jewelry manufacturers, small and large companies in Paris and elsewhere. Each volume consists of 24 color plates.
The jewelry products are printed in rich colors on a black background, giving the impression of sparkling jewelry lying on a plate covered with black velvet cloth. Each plate displays a number of intricately painted jewels - pins. Clips, bracelets, necklaces, pendants, etc.
One of the reasons they are so vivid is that the color lithographs are all done by hand. By using varnish (French "gomme", mainly white), hand-painting it gives the crystals or diamonds a shimmering thickness that can be felt on the page under the fingers - and gives the plate an extraordinary richness, tactile and Visual effect.
