Its surface has a warm, matte luster that will become brighter with wear, developing a patina.** The manufacturing process involves finely grinding cinnabar granules into a paste, mixing with water, allowing it to settle, collecting the upper cloudy liquid, and then allowing it to settle again for purification (the water-milling method). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried, then pressed using traditional methods. Even on a cross-section, fine mineral sparkles can be seen. **「Emperor Sand」** **A brighter, truer red with higher hardness.** The manufacturing process involves multiple stages of crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, water-milling, and high polishing from natural cinnabar ore to achieve progressive purification, followed by traditional pressing. Emperor sand has almost no visible mineral sparkles on the surface, but contains them internally. The surface is treated with **high polishing** to achieve a metallic luster, especially under sunlight, enhancing its metallic feel. **「Purple Gold Sand」** **A purplish-red hue with slightly lower hardness than Emperor Sand.** The manufacturing process involves multiple stages of crushing, grinding, and screening from natural cinnabar ore, but **without water-milling purification**. Therefore, the surface is less refined and has scattered, star-like mineral sparkles. **「Crystal Sand」** **A purplish-red color, translucent.** Large cinnabar particles are directly chipped from cinnabar ore. "丹" is an ideogrammatic character depicting ancient miners extracting minerals from a well. Thus, the character "丹" actually represents the character "井" (jǐng - well) with a dot in the middle, signifying something taken from a mine. This something is cinnabar. Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā) became known as cinnabar. "丹" and "朱" describe the color, and "砂" (shā) describes its irregular, granular form. The color of cinnabar is exceptionally enduring. Chinese calligraphy and painting are known as "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. Cinnabar is also an indispensable component of "八宝印泥" (bābǎo yìnní - eight-treasure ink paste).
