**A New Concept for 108-Bead Bracelets**
In traditional thinking, 108-bead bracelets are exclusively for Buddhist prayer beads and practitioners. Thinking this way is quite outdated :p
While 108-bead bracelets indeed originate from Buddhist scriptures and, due to their length, can be wrapped around the wrist multiple times or worn as a necklace, they have evolved with the times. Today, the materials, designs, and decorative uses of 108-bead items have advanced, becoming more fashionable, layered, and versatile. Designers must also adapt to user preferences to create unique, customized pieces.
Furthermore, **108 has never been exclusive to Buddhists. Even non-Buddhists can embrace the auspicious meaning of 108 and its potential for layered styling.**
We often share with our clients that a 108-bead bracelet is an external object. Whether we are Buddhist or not, chanting sutras or praying is primarily an inner practice. **We should not be attached to or hindered by material possessions, nor be confined by the material of the bracelet, the number of beads, how to hold it, or whether to wear it on the left or right hand.**
When handling prayer beads, one should seek convenience and freedom, just as the "Diamond Sutra" states: "All phenomena are like dreams, illusions, bubbles, and shadows; like dew drops and lightning flashes. Thus, they should be contemplated." Bracelets and prayer beads are also phenomena, so one should not be overly concerned with them when using them. **Comfort is paramount.**
**The Origin of 108 Beads**
108 beads represent 108 types of afflictions. Specifically, the six senses (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind) each experience three types of feelings: suffering, pleasure, and indifference. Within the six senses, there are also three types of states: good, bad, and neutral, totaling 18. Combined with the three temporal dimensions of past, present, and future, this amounts to 108.
The 108 types of afflictions signify that sentient beings have 108 kinds of troubles, which can give rise to various negative karma. Therefore, they must be eradicated. By eliminating these 108 afflictions, one can achieve a state of tranquility for body and mind. Wearing prayer beads on the hand serves as a constant reminder to cultivate the compassion of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, maintaining a calm and unhurried state of mind in any environment.
In Tibetan, prayer beads are called "changwa," meaning to remember, think of, or recall. It also signifies continuity. It represents the constant remembrance of gurus, yidams, dakinis, and dharma protectors; and also signifies that gurus, yidams, dakinis, and dharma protectors constantly remember me, bestowing siddhis and wisdom.
**Nanhong**
Nanhong belongs to agate and was historically known as "red jade." Its texture is fine and lustrous. Legend has it that the most authentic Nanhong was exclusively found in Baoshan, Yunnan, China, and has since been depleted. Today, the Nanhong circulating in the market is mostly from Jiangsu and Fujian provinces. Gansu and Liangshan also produce Nanhong.
Due to different geological environments, Nanhong agate raw materials vary in texture and mineral characteristics. Different geological conditions result in different appearances. Based on color, it can be classified into: Jin Hong (brocade red), Rose Red, Cinnabar Red, White and Red material, and Striped Red material.
**Agate**
Agate, also known as "yu sui," is primarily composed of silicon dioxide from volcanic eruptions. It is a relatively abundant gemstone in the Earth's crust, making it one of the oldest gemstones in history.
After volcanic eruptions, silicon dioxide melts entered the pores or fissures of volcanic rocks, depositing layer by layer, forming concentric circles. It can be opaque, translucent, or transparent. This forms what is known as "banded agate" (finely layered ones are even called "silk agate"). When distributed in dots, it resembles snowflakes, commonly known as "**Sakura Agate**" (mostly from Madagascar). Its color is typically a pinkish-orange base with white floral patterns; green, purple, and gray bases are rare. Those with rare colors, translucent jade-like texture, beautiful and unique patterns, and scarce mineral content are considered top quality.
"**Yanyuan Agate**" is named after its origin in Yanyuan, Liangshan, Sichuan. Because it possesses one or more colors such as pink, purple, green, white, blue, yellow, and brown, and its origin is adjacent to Nanhong Agate producing areas, it is also called "Seven-Colored Nanhong."
Agate is composed of various colors (mineral colors) and may form concentric circles, wavy patterns, layers, or parallel bands, hence the saying "a thousand types of agate, ten thousand kinds of jade."
Agate symbolizes stable energy, which can calm emotions, soothe anxiety, enhance vitality and energy, strengthen personal aura and magnetic field, attract positive energy and good luck, enhance fortune, and further enhance creativity and productivity, leading to an abundance of inspiration during the creative process.
Due to its wide color spectrum, agate can correspond to the seven chakras of the human body, making it a precious and beautiful treasure with both historical value and functional properties.
**Finger Guard (Ring)**
The origin of the ring can be traced back to the finger guard.
Finger guards, also known as "ban zhi," "ban zhi," or "bang zhi," were tubular protective gear made of leather or animal bone worn on the thumb by ancient archers to prevent the arrow shaft from scratching the thumb. Since the Qing Dynasty, this tubular protective gear evolved into decorative items made of hard, precious materials such as gold, silver, jade, agate, turquoise, and ivory, symbolizing power and status.
Traditional finger guards were classified as "civil" or "military" based on their size and thickness. Military finger guards were typically simple and plain, while civil finger guards often featured poetry or patterns on their outer surfaces. Finger guards made of precious materials were exclusively used by royalty and nobility. For commoners, finger guards made of Hetian jade, ivory, or porcelain were most prevalent.
In ancient times, the distinction in materials for finger guards served as a symbol of social status and carried a warning. Thus, it evolved into what is known today as a ring.
**Red Jasper**
Red Jasper is a newly discovered jade variety in modern times, yet its mineral age spans hundreds of millions of years. Its main origins are South Africa and Guilin, China. South African Red Jasper, influenced by the subtropical climate and geological movements and volcanic eruptions, is superior in quality, spirituality, and price, possessing high ornamental, investment, and collection value.
South African Red Jasper has a vibrant color, and seeing red signifies auspiciousness, implying "good fortune ascending" and symbolizing that all matters will go smoothly, averting misfortune and bringing good luck. It is a color of auspiciousness.
The main components of South African Red Jasper are silicon dioxide (SiO2) and quartz. It has good toughness, making it very suitable for carving. Its hardness is 6.7, making it resistant to wear and tear, and unaffected by acid, alkali, wind, and sun.
Red Jasper has a lustrous and magnificent texture, often accompanied by auspicious cloud dragon patterns, landscape patterns, and wave patterns, offering a myriad of scenes to be savored.
**No Charm**
By the end of the Ming Dynasty, jade pendants with "no patterns" (無紋) became most popular in jade carving. They were homophonously called "Wu Shi Pai" (no matter/no trouble cards), also meaning "peace and safety." They served as "wish cards" for people seeking peace and health.
**Round Heaven Square Earth**
"Round Heaven, Square Earth" is an ancient Chinese cosmology and philosophical concept, which combines the harmonious movement of the heavens with the stable rectitude of the earth, embodying a cosmic view of harmony between heaven and earth.
The Buddhist cosmology also aligns with the concept of "Round Heaven, Square Earth":
In Buddhism, the universe is composed of three elements: "water, fire, and earth," represented by the patterns "○ circle, △ triangle, and □ square":
"○" Circle: The cyclical nature of cosmic phenomena, symbolizing harmony and compassion.
"△" Triangle: Between heaven and earth is humanity, symbolizing vitality.
"□" Square: Symbolizing the earth, rules, order, and a straight, upright heart.
The idea of "Round Heaven, Square Earth" embodies the essence of "harmony between heaven and man": The process of all things from existence to non-existence, formation, existence, decay, and emptiness is closely related to the energy changes between heaven and earth. Therefore, ancient people believed in "harmony between heaven and man" to conform to the ever-changing laws of nature.

**◈ About Use and Collection**
1. Natural gemstones possess natural luster and unique textures (minor details such as small black spots, stone lines, ice cracks, clouds, mineral deficiencies, asymmetry, etc., are natural). As you wear them frequently, you will observe slight color changes in the natural gemstones, which usually become more translucent and captivating. This is also the best method of maintenance.
Natural organic gemstones (such as coral and amber) have low hardness and are not resistant to acids and alkalis. When encountering dirt, avoid washing with detergent. Simply rinse with clean water and wipe with a soft cloth. You can also use a soft brush dipped in a small amount of mineral oil (such as baby oil) for gentle care.
2. Metal jewelry has a long lifespan. Avoid external damage or strong acids and alkalis that may cause fading.
3. Fabric materials (ribbon, cotton, gauze) have a soft and comfortable texture and a long lifespan. Avoid high temperatures, external damage, or strong acids and alkalis that may cause fading.
4. For jewelry of any material, when encountering dirt, wipe it with a soft cloth dampened with water as appropriate, or use an appropriate amount of neutral detergent for suitable materials. After washing, ensure it is dried promptly.
5. When jewelry is removed, it should be properly packaged and stored to block excess air, slow down oxidation and discoloration, and avoid overlapping or pressing.
