Prosperity and Fortune
In the countryside of Yilan, much like the idyllic setting described in "The Peach Blossom Spring," there are fertile fields, beautiful ponds, and mulberry trees, with well-maintained paths and the sounds of chickens and dogs. Dogs of various appearances often stand guard before rural homes, symbolizing safety and protection, imbued with auspicious meanings of good fortune. The "woof woof" sound frequently heard in the countryside is homophonous with "wang" (prosperous), signifying wealth and prosperity for both family and finances, symbolizing thriving.
During traditional Lunar New Year celebrations, every household hangs red lanterns to create an atmosphere of joy and reunion. Spring Festival lanterns carry the auspicious meaning of "hong yun dang tou" (red luck arriving at the head), symbolizing great fortune.
Blooming before all other flowers, the plum blossom heralds spring and is revered as an auspicious symbol of good tidings. A common saying goes, "A branch of plum blossoms signifies the New Year." Each plum blossom that unfurls adds to the festive spirit of the approaching Spring Festival. The five petals of the plum blossom also symbolize the "Five Blessings" (longevity, wealth, health, virtue, and a peaceful end).
