At the end of December 2023, a bead merchant brought back Qing Dynasty old Nan Hong agate from overseas.
These ancient beads are priced by the gram in overseas markets.
The merchant mentioned that pieces in good condition start from NT$800 per gram.
This batch brought back to Taiwan... is of ordinary condition, so the price certainly couldn't reach NT$800 per gram.
Consequently, due to the ordinary condition and the sluggish economy in Taiwan, very few were sold.
The merchant was under immense pressure. In March 2024, someone needing to repay a debt and having surplus cash... acquired a few pieces.
In Taiwan, old Nan Hong was often seen 20-30 years ago as spacer beads on Tibetan monastic malas.
Later, after intense collecting and price inflation by mainland Chinese buyers,
it became uncommon to find old Nan Hong used as decorative spacer beads on malas.
Often, they were disassembled and sold individually.
The "Lao Gao Bai" (meaning old ivory) three-hole mala head, commonly found and disassembled from entire malas for individual sale, is a prime example.
This Qing Dynasty old Nan Hong agate weighs 9.42 grams.
At this time when everything is increasing in price, people are struggling to make a living, and the antique world experiences periods of scarcity and despair,
we are selling at a low price, having acquired it at a low price.
