Art from the Sun, Sand, and Earth — Chulucanas Ceramic Incense Holder
Chulucanas is a celebrated hub of ceramic artistry in Peru, where pottery creations are born from the sun's embrace, the nourishment of the earth, and the skillful hands of artisans. Descendants of the ancient Vicus civilization, these craftspeople continue their ancestral wisdom and techniques, handcrafting each piece with soul. This ceramic incense holder is their artistic gift to contemporary living.
The Making Process
The creation of our ceramic incense holders begins with the careful kneading of clay to achieve a uniform texture, followed by portioning the clay according to the desired weight. After shaping and adjusting the height, the pieces undergo approximately three hours of natural air-drying.
Once dry, artisans hand-paint each holder with natural mineral pigments, applying 4 to 5 layers repeatedly to achieve the ideal saturated color. They are then fired in a kiln, allowing the colors to meld with the clay.
The final crucial step involves traditional smoking techniques using mango leaves, returning the pieces to the kiln for another two hours. This not only imparts a distinctive hue and aroma to the pottery but also serves as a tribute to nature and tradition. After cooling, they are cleaned and refined, culminating in each incense holder that is both simple and extraordinary.
Let every incense burning connect you to a thousand-year legacy of handmade warmth.
