About Wood Firing Wood firing is a traditional kiln technique where temperatures exceed 1200°C using firewood. The natural "fire marks" left by the direct flame on the ceramic body, along with the ash from the burning wood, create a warm, rich, and varied coloration that is unattainable with electric or gas kilns. Compared to conventional electric and gas kilns, the entire wood-firing process—from kiln loading, ignition, sealing, to cooling—takes approximately 8 to 10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors like humidity, wood dryness, the potter's rate of wood addition, and kiln placement, all influence the success of the piece, leading to a higher rate of breakage. Experienced wood-firing artists carefully consider airflow dynamics during kiln loading, planning the placement of pieces of various sizes, estimating flame paths, and determining the precise timing and intensity of wood and charcoal additions.
