Its sharp, pointed leaves are arranged tightly, featuring small, raised white bumps along the tips, giving it an eagle-claw appearance. It is shade-tolerant and drought-resistant, making it a perfect addition to indoor spaces. The Eagle Claw shares similarities with the Haworthia fasciata, both exhibiting a robust, claw-like form. However, the Eagle Claw's leaves are not as stiff as those of the fasciata and possess a more vibrant, emerald-green hue. It thrives in warm, dry conditions with ample sunlight but can tolerate lower light levels and is generally easy to care for. Avoid overwatering, as excessively moist soil can lead to rot. During spring and autumn, increasing watering frequency will promote vigorous growth. In the heat of summer, it enters a semi-dormant state, requiring reduced watering. During winter, water sparingly and keep the plant in a warm, south-facing indoor location. | Light | Prefers bright, indirect light. During intense summer heat, avoid direct sun exposure and ensure good ventilation. While it tolerates shade, it still requires some light; prolonged darkness can cause the plant to deform and etiolate, which is difficult to rectify. | Temperature | Not cold-hardy. The optimal growing temperature is between 15-25°C. It should not be exposed to temperatures below 10°C. Temperatures above 30°C may induce dormancy. | Watering | Water using the principle of "water only when dry, and water thoroughly." Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot. Conversely, do not let it dry out for extended periods, as this can cause leaves to become shriveled. During the growing seasons of spring and autumn, allow the soil to dry out completely before watering thoroughly, approximately once a week. In summer, water lightly about every two weeks. In winter, water only after the soil has completely dried. Adjust watering frequency based on your specific growing environment. | Summer Dormancy | During summer dormancy, due to high temperatures, the plant's growth slows or stops, and lower leaves may occasionally dry out. Throughout the summer, keep the potting soil moderately dry, providing a small amount of water around the edge of the pot monthly. The Eagle Claw is quite resilient and rarely suffers from crown rot. During dormancy, the plant requires minimal water to support its slowed or stopped root activity; completely withholding water due to high temperatures can prolong its recovery time. Dormancy can deplete the water and nutrients within some leaves, leading to shrinkage or wilting. Due to slow growth and high temperatures in summer, significant growth is generally not visible on the leaves. | Propagation | Commonly propagated by division, cuttings, and seeds. Division can be done during repotting, at any time of the year, but is often done in April or May when young offsets around the mother plant are carefully separated and potted individually. After potting the divisions, place them in a shaded area and control watering. Gradually increase light and watering as new roots develop. | Flowering | The plant flowers in spring and summer, producing racemose inflorescences. Cross-pollination between different individuals is necessary for seed production; hybridization with other species within the same genus is also possible.
