Hailed as one of the "Three Treasures" (like tree sap, silkworm silk, and bee honey), Urushi lacquer is a natural resin coating. It is a white, viscous liquid that flows from the bark of the lacquer tree. Upon contact with air, it gradually turns brown and is processed into a coating. It is a natural product known for its resistance to corrosion, strong acids, strong alkalis, moisture, and high temperatures, as well as its insulating and weather-resistant properties. Natural Urushi lacquer is globally recognized as the "King of Coatings."
The use of Urushi lacquer dates back to the Neolithic period, with artifacts unearthed as evidence. By the Warring States period, exquisite lacquerware had already emerged. Over a thousand years of development, the craftsmanship became increasingly sophisticated and enduring, with exports reaching various Southeast Asian countries.
However, the extraction and production of Urushi lacquer have limited its widespread use. In ancient times, only the elite could afford lacquerware. Today, the craft has declined, and very few people are familiar with Urushi lacquer techniques.
