Every spring in Hong Kong, thousands of Hong Kong newts leave the streams and migrate into the forest. For them, crossing the road has become an annual life-or-death crisis.
According to a 2024 survey, during the two-month peak migration period alone, more than 1,400 Hong Kong newts were killed by vehicles — that’s “roadkill”.
Not every newt is lucky enough to survive and return to the water to swim freely. Yet this — gliding gracefully through clear streams — is exactly what they’re meant to look like.
This little one made it.
