Vase Tapio Wirkkala & Dorothy Hafner by Rosenthal, New Wave Series, 80s - Items for Display - Pottery White

Product Description

Vintage vase for flowers in textured glazed porcelain by Rosenthal, Century New Wave Series, c.1980s. This work of Postmodern design captures collaboration of American and Finnish design from Tapio Wirkkala and Dorothy Hafner. The form, by Tapio Wirkkala is similar to that of his famous Kantarelli vases with a broad umbrella rim overhanging the column body. The loud form of the vase is the characteristic of Wirkkala's designs. The surface artwork, designed by Dorothy Hafner is of neon-esque pastel colours that have been composed into bold, distorted geometrics, interspersed with pop art accent patterns. The artwork wraps itself around the body and the rim of the vase and Hafner's signature marks the design. This vase would suit a room with Modernist, Post-Modern or Contemporary inspired decor. The underside of the base bears Rosenthal's exclusive Studio Line insignia stamp with Wirkkala's s signature, Hafner's signature is present on the surface artwork. Tapio Wirkkala was an influential Finnish designer and sculptor. Driven by a deep love for Finnish flora and fauna, and the natural landscape that contains it. The sub-zero temperatures, snow, ice and unforgiving winds shape the landscape and selected the species that would survive. Tapio Wirkkala worked as one of Iittala’s key glass designers from 1946-85. Iittala's Ultima Thule glassware, featuring the dripping icicles effect is said to have taken thousands of hours to develop a glassblowing technique that would produce the effect. Winning three Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1951 and again in 1954, his name became increasingly revered abroad, and as a result, he was employed by foreign companies such as Rosenthal (1956-85) in Germany and Venini (1965-79) in Italy. Dorothy Hafner is an American ceramist and glass artist. Born in Connecticut, Hafner earned her bachelor's degree in 1974. She worked as a production manager for the International Craft Film Festival and in early 1976, served as director of the international department of the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York City. The following two years, she was artist-in-residence at Artpark in Lewiston, New York. In 1979 she set up the firm Art in Dining in New York City, under which banner she designed porcelain tableware for such firms as Neiman Marcus and Tiffany & Co.; beginning in 1982 her work was also carried by Rosenthal. Dimensions: Height: 16 cm. (from base to rim). Rim diameter: 24.5 cm. Base diameter: 10.5 cm. The vase is in excellent condition.
