*Echinopsis subdenudata*, belonging to the Echinopsis genus in the Cactaceae family, is a variant of *Echinopsis multiplex*. It is also known by common names such as "Ruyi Jade," "Grass Ball," and "Short-Haired Ball." Native to South America, its spherical body can grow up to ten centimeters, featuring over ten distinct longitudinal ribs adorned with spines. *Echinopsis subdenudata* typically blooms at night, with flowers that have a long, trumpet-like base and can reach up to twenty centimeters in length. Its blooms are exceptionally beautiful, closely resembling those of the Queen of the Night cactus.
The primary growing season for this cactus is summer, which also marks its peak flowering period. The blooms are short-lived, opening around 6-7 PM and wilting by noon the next day. The flowers are large, elegantly white, and emit a subtle, pleasant fragrance, a rare trait among many Echinopsis species. Its upright posture gives it a distinguished appearance, akin to a crane among chickens, which is likely why it earned the moniker "Night Queen" in Europe and America.
If the apex of the *Echinopsis subdenudata* appears a greenish-blue, it indicates insufficient light during cultivation. In such cases, relocating it to a sunnier spot is recommended to prevent etiolation and deformation of the plant.
The "Short-Haired Ball" cactus is remarkably resilient. With controlled watering and overwintering indoors, it generally thrives. The main body readily produces offsets, or "pups," which can easily be detached and planted to grow into new cacti.
ใHabitsใ
*Echinopsis subdenudata* thrives in warm, sunny environments. It is drought-tolerant but cannot withstand cold. It requires shade in summer and ample sunlight in winter. The ideal temperature range is 18-30ยฐC.
ใWateringใ
Avoid watering immediately after transplanting. Mist the plant 2-3 times daily for the first two weeks. After about half a month, you can start watering sparingly. Once new roots have established after a month, gradually increase the watering volume. Follow the principle of "water when dry." Water only when the soil surface feels dry, and ensure adequate water volume. Crucially, prevent waterlogging in the pot.
ใFertilizingใ
During the growing season, feed your *Echinopsis subdenudata* once a month with a succulent nutrient solution. Excessive water and fertilizer can lead to etiolation and malformation of the cactus body, shorter spines, and reduced flowering.
๐ Key Care Tips: Prefers warmth but needs shade in summer; drought-tolerant but not frost-hardy; water thoroughly when dry, avoid waterlogging.
