He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts). In 1950, he established the Yanagi Design Institute. In 1957, his Butterfly Chair won the prestigious Golden Compass award at the Milan Triennale. Yanagi believed that hands are the best tools for conveying the warmth and ideas behind a product; by feeling with one's hands, the answers will emerge. Each piece of tableware is meticulously calculated and adjusted by hand, with form always considered in relation to necessity and function before design begins. If we are to speak of the most revered and representative design masters of contemporary Japan, Sori Yanagi is undoubtedly the one.
