**Formosan Sika Deer**
The Formosan Sika Deer is a subspecies endemic to Taiwan, named for the plum blossom-like white spots adorning its back.
Since ancient times, the beautiful hide of the sika deer unfortunately led to rampant hunting. During the Japanese colonial era, herds could still be found near water sources in areas like Jingmei, Muzha, and Wulai. However, after 1969, due to habitat destruction and extensive human hunting, the Formosan Sika Deer population dwindled. The deer seen today are part of a captive breeding program at Kenting National Park.
**IUCN Status: Extinct in the Wild (EW)**
