In 2021, we teamed up with AKAME to create this beautiful Woven Plate. The Woven Plate represents a meeting of minds between HMM and AKAME. Connected through a mutual friend, the Taiwanese design brand HMM and the renowned borderless restaurant AKAME in Pingtung discovered a shared vision. At the time, HMM was developing a glass plate concept, while AKAME's executive chef, Alex Peng, was also conceptualizing new dishware for his restaurant. Chef Alex perfectly summarized their collaboration: "If a dish is the body, it needs clothes. "AKAME" means "to roast" in the Rukai indigenous language. Chef Alex replaces modern stoves with traditional wood-fired kilns. By using abundant local spices like Makauy (mountain pepper), Taiwanese angelica, Tana (prickly ash), and Taiwan white pine, and applying ancient culinary techniques like smoking, grilling, drying, fermenting, and curing—all combined with the refined spirit of French Fine Dining—he offers a completely new interpretation of traditional indigenous cuisine. https://shoplineimg.com/media/61124c67959756003826b1db/original.jpg The inspiration for the Woven Plate comes from the traditional shell ginger woven plates used by Taiwanese indigenous people. We translated the concept of layered weaving into pure glass, fully showcasing the beauty of glass craftsmanship. Designing a plate with no foot ring, a convex/concave curved bottom, and an interwoven texture of varying depths was our biggest challenge. HMM brought in our trusted partner, Spring Pool Glass, hoping to retain the rustic, primitive characteristics while adhering to HMM's signature aesthetic of delicate order. https://shoplineimg.com/media/611b3261cf413e001a9ce31a/original.jpg To better capture the tactile curves of a handmade woven basket, we extended the warp and weft textures from the bottom upwards, abandoning the traditional foot ring. The arched base naturally supports the plate. Moving closer to an art piece also meant a significantly more difficult manufacturing process. After numerous discussions and adjustments with Spring Pool Glass, the final mold was perfected. The base and edges require fire polishing. Because the plate has a wide surface, it experiences greater temperature differentials, requiring extreme attention to uniformity and thickness. During fire polishing, annealing, and decal baking, precise temperature control is critical. If the heat is too high, the plate could collapse and deform, requiring the masters to rely entirely on their experienced eyes for manual adjustments. If it cools too quickly, the glass is prone to cracking. Because different microwaves heat at varying speeds, please be mindful of temperature changes; avoid a sudden temperature shock greater than 50ºC. If you are unsure about your microwave's heating speed, we recommend not using it. Do not heat in a rice cooker or steamer. ・ Treat it as you would traditional glassware. It is heat and cold resistant but sensitive to sudden temperature shifts.
