# Hand-drawn Botanical Illustration · Juniper Branch · Digital Download (No Physical Item Shipped)
I drew this juniper branch in the state that makes it most interesting to draw—and most interesting to look at: the berry-like cones at three stages of ripeness. Small and green in their first year, turning to a waxy blue-green in their second, and finally the deep blue-black of full ripeness in their third year, all present on the same branch at the same time, because that is how juniper grows.
A single branch can simultaneously be in its first, second, and third year of cone production, carrying three colours of fruit at once. Each of those blue-black cones is a seed cone, not a true berry: a modified cone whose scales have fused and become fleshy, enclosing the two or three seeds inside.
When crushed—or placed in a distillation flask—they release the dry, resinous, pine-like aroma that defines the flavour of gin. The connection between juniper and gin is direct and ancient: the word *gin* derives from *genever*, itself rooted in the Dutch and French words for juniper. Before gin became a spirit, genever was a medicinal preparation, and before that, juniper had been used in cooking and medicine throughout Europe and Asia for at least 4,000 years.
The plant itself has an extraordinary distribution. *Juniperus communis* possesses one of the widest natural ranges of any woody plant on Earth, growing from the Arctic Circle to the mountains of the Mediterranean, from Ireland to Japan. It is one of the very few plant species native to both the Old World and the New World.
## Specimen Notes
**Juniper (*Juniperus communis*)** — Evergreen conifer of the cypress family; one of the widest natural distributions of any woody plant, ranging from the Arctic Circle to the Mediterranean, from Ireland to Japan and North America.
**Cones (Not Berries):** The "berries" are actually seed cones with fused, fleshy scales rather than true berries. They require 2–3 years to ripen, changing from green (Year 1) → waxy blue-green (Year 2) → deep blue-black (Year 3).
**Multi-stage Fruiting:** All three stages of ripeness can be present on the same branch simultaneously—a defining characteristic shown in this illustration.
**Gin:** Dried and crushed cones provide the defining flavour of gin. The word *gin* derives from *genever* (Dutch/French for juniper). Juniper has been used medicinally and in cooking for at least 4,000 years.
**Needles:** Sharp, needle-like leaves arranged in whorls of three. Each needle features a single white stomatal band on its upper surface.
**Habitat:** Rocky hillsides, chalk downland, moorland, and open woodland. One of the most cold-hardy conifers, tolerant of poor and dry soils.
**Ecology:** Cones are eaten by thrushes, waxwings, and other birds that disperse the seeds. Dense growth provides shelter for small mammals and nesting birds.
## On the Wall, or as a Gift
At home, this print suits a living room, study, kitchen, Scandinavian interior, minimalist space, or any crisp evergreen setting that benefits from a botanically rich yet structurally restrained subject.
The juniper branch has a particular quality of precision: whorled needles, multi-stage cones, and an almost architectural branch structure. Against white or pale grey walls it feels clean and Nordic. In a dark frame, the blue tones of the cones deepen, creating a more atmospheric and complex presence.
As a gift, juniper is ideal for cooks who use juniper berries with game or pickling, distillers and gin enthusiasts, naturalists familiar with the plant from moorland walks, gardeners who grow it as an evergreen structural plant, or anyone who associates the scent of crushed juniper with cold air and high places.
It makes a thoughtful birthday gift, a housewarming present for a serious kitchen, or a distinctive botanical addition to a living room or study wall.

## Printing Recommendations
**Best Results:** Matte or semi-gloss paper.
Matte paper most closely resembles the feel of the original illustration, preserving its hand-drawn character. Semi-gloss paper produces slightly richer colours and stronger contrast.
**Paper Weight:** 200 gsm or heavier for a fine-art presentation. Standard 80–90 gsm office paper is perfectly suitable for test prints or casual display.
For exceptional quality, look for a print lab offering cotton rag or baryta paper (240 gsm+). Botanical illustration printed on fine-art paper closely approaches the appearance and weight of an original drawing.
The files are prepared for both metric (A-series) and US standard sizes. Simply provide the PDF to your print shop and request printing at 100% scale.
## Size Guide

## From the Studio
Every drawing begins with biological study and close observation: the scientific name, the structure, and the characteristics that make a species uniquely itself.
The work follows the tradition of European botanical illustration, where science and art are the same act.
Created in a studio near Lake Como in northern Italy.
