Collection description
Yun Shouping (AD 1633-1690), originally named Ge, also named Shouping, later named Xing, was born in Wujin, Jiangsu Province. He was good at landscape painting at first, but due to his modesty and inability to compete with Wang Hui (1632-1717 AD), he switched to flowers. Xu Chongsi (in the second half of the 10th century) adopted the boneless method and became the master of flower painting in the Qing Dynasty. This painting has a branch-folding composition, but it is in the form of a scroll, which is also rare in Yun Shouping's works. The peonies in the painting represent the flower of wealth, and the cypress branches represent longevity. The Chinese character for magnolia, "jade," is added to it, which means "yutang" means wealth and honor. Common auspicious themes are presented in an elegant painting style, just like the bright colors of peonies, but the elegant color shows a noble but not arrogant, gorgeous but not vulgar temperament. This is what Yun is admired for.
