**From whence does the legitimacy of power arise?**
**When can citizens be said to live well and with dignity?**
**Is there truly room for morality in the political world?**
A just society that values individual autonomy should provide fair opportunities and conditions for free and equal citizens, enabling each person to pursue a life of self-determination. This implies that the state cannot treat citizens arbitrarily, nor can it regard them merely as instruments. Instead, it must respect individuals' fundamental rights. Politics must be moral because human beings possess dignity. This is the starting point of political morality.
The first edition and the expanded edition of this book were honored with: The 8th Hong Kong Book Prize in 2015 and the Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Award (Social Sciences) in 2017.
The author has added a new preface for the third edition, and two recent essays are included at the end of the book: "On Political Philosophy" and "An Outline of a Just Society."
"Those who live for their beliefs, convinced that integrity of character and societal justice are only achieved by embodying these convictions in life, hold a realizable ideal, provided we are willing to strive for it. With belief comes hope. I pray this book will accompany the people of Hong Kong onward."
